Best friends since attending elementary school in the Icelandic town of Mosfellsbær (population of 12,000), Kaleo have achieved enormous success with over one billion streams on Spotify.  Because of this longevity, Kaleo give each other space but can then coalesce into freight train of sound, especially on “Walk on Water” and “Backbone”. They came to Nashville’s Ryman Auditorium in Monday, April 4th.

It’s astonishing that the influence and power of Mississippi Delta blues penetrated such a small town.

On several songs Jökul Júlíusson, or “JJ”, played his resonator guitar. A resonator is an acoustic guitar that is four times louder than a conventional wooden guitar; the sound is throaty and is a hallmark of the blues.

A line that JJ emphasized was from “Skinny”, and it drew a thunderous response:

You’ve got to stay skinny, don’t you, girl?
You’ve got to stay pretty as you were
You know we are living in a fucked up world

In my next life I want to come back with JJ’s voice, hair, and cheekbones.
