We’ve long known that Massachusetts music rocks, and not just Boston, but even the likes of “U-Mass” and more. So, head out to Quincy for the new In Between Days on the weekend of August 19th-20th:

SATURDAY, AUGUST 19th

Modest Mouse, In Between Days Stage, 8:00 PM – 8:45 PM

Washington State’s Modest Mouse (QRO photos) broke through to mainstream success in 2004 with Good News For People Who Like Bad News, and followed that up by adding Smiths guitarist Johnny Marr for 2007’s We Were Dead Before the Ship Even Sank (QRO review) – unfortunately, Marr left to join the even younger Cribs and then solo. But they’re still big and great outdoors (QRO photos at a festival), and in 2015 finally put out their first new record since Sank, Strangers To Ourselves (QRO review). They will come to Massachusetts (QRO photos at a Massachusetts festival) on tour (QRO 2021 live review) behind 2021’s great The Golden Casket (QRO review) and single “We Are Between” (QRO review).

The Beths, Arbella Insurance Stage, 7:00 PM – 8:00 PM

New Zealand has a great tradition of indie-pop, from The Chills and Straitjacket Fits to today’s Beths (QRO ’23 photos).

Sunny Day Real Estate, In Between Days Stage, 5:45 PM – 7:00 PM

One of the founders of emo music around the turn of the millennium (and even before), Sunny Day Real Estate have had a long legacy, and that’s included numerous reunions (though at QRO we’re looking for indie’s greatest touring bassist, Jason Narducy – QRO interview).

Weakened Friends, Arbella Insurance Stage, 5:00 PM – 5:45 PM

New England’s Weakened Friends (QRO photos) – that’s Portland, Maine, not Oregon – come down the shore behind 2021’s Quitter.

Blitzen Trapper, In Between Days Stage, 4:00 PM – 5:00 PM

While some of the ‘sweet seventies’ revival has been over-hyped, Portland’s Blitzen Trapper (QRO photos) deserved their praise, as they add in some freak to their folk. After self-releasing their first three records (including 2007’s Wild Mountain NationQRO review), they signed to Sub Pop for the excellent Furr (QRO review), 2010’s Destroyer of the Void (QRO review), and 2011’s American Goldwing (QRO review), before moving to Vagrant for 2013’s VII, 2015’s All Across This Land, and 2017’s Wild and Reckless, and now Yep Roc for 2020’s Holy Smokes Future Jokes. And their live show (QRO live review) has stayed strong.

Phantogram, Arbella Insurance Stage, 7:00 PM – 8:00 PM

Saratoga Springs’ dancetronica act Phantogram (QRO photos at a festival) got notice less for their debut full-length Eyelid Movies (QRO review) than their enchanting live show (QRO photos at a festival) – which works outdoors (QRO photos outdoors at a festival), at least when in the evening (QRO photos at a festival). 2014’s Voices (QRO review) upped their game (QRO photos at a festival), after which they teamed up with Big Boi as ‘Big Grams’ (QRO photos at a festival). But now the Phanto is back (QRO photos), with 2016’s strong Three (QRO review) and 2020’s Ceremony, coming to In Between Days (QRO photos at a ’23 festival).
