Hangout 2023 Preview

Red Hot Chili Peppers, 9:30 PM

How can you be into music and not know the Red Hot Chili Peppers (QRO photos at a ’22 festival)? RHCP (QRO photos) emerged from the same sweaty Los Angeles eighties music scene that gave birth to Jane’s Addiction & more, and the Peppers (QRO photos) mix alt-rock with the funkified bass of the one-and-only Flea plus the sexy energy of singular frontman Anthony Kiedis. Along with drummer/Will Ferrell-look-alike Chad Smith and guitarist John Frusciante, the band racked up awards and record sales with such classics as Mother’s Milk, Blood Sugar Sex Magik, “Higher Ground”, “Under the Bridge”, and much more. Frusciante left in 1992 to be replaced by Jane’s Addiction’s own Dave Navarro, before Frusciante returned in 1999 for the band’s biggest selling record ever, Californication.

More recently, Frusciante has left again, to focus on his solo work (QRO review), replaced by upgraded touring guitarist Josh Klinghoffer for 2011’s I’m In You (QRO review) and 2017’s year’s strong The Getaway (QRO review). But of course, Frusciante came back, ‘cause ain’t nothin’ stoppin’ the Red Hot Chili Peppers (QRO photos), who come back to Hangout (QRO photos at a festival) to headline (after having to miss 2020), touring (QRO ’22 live review) behind this year’s Ultimate Love and Return of the Dream Canteen.

Rainbow Kitten Surprise, 7:30 PM – 8:30 PM

North Carolina’s Rainbow Kitten Surprise (QRO photos at a festival), or ‘RKS’, come down to Gulf Shores (after having to miss 2020) behind 2018’s How To: Friends, Love, Freefall and last year’s Mary (B-Sides).

Rapper Russ Vitale has been living up to the hype ever since 2017 debut There’s Really a Wolf – even as he’s also gotten into fair share of beefs…

Tove Lo, 3:15 PM – 4:15 PM

Out of Stockholm, Ebba Tove Lesa Nilsson – a.k.a. Tove Lo (QRO photos at a festival) – has written for numerous other artists like Icona Pop, Ellie Goulding, and Hilary Duff, but 2013 hit single “Habits” has made her a leading lady all of her own (QRO live review). She comes to Hangout (after having to miss 2020 – QRO photos at a ’22 festival) behind last year’s Dirt Femme and her latest big tour (QRO ’23 live review).

Meet Me @ The Altar, 1:30 PM – 2:15 PM

Originally formed by three musicians in three different states making music over the internet, the pop-punk Meet Me @ the Altar (QRO photos at a ’22 festival) have come together & were signed by Fueled By Ramen, and come to Hangout (QRO photos at a ’22 festival) after releasing this year’s Past // Present // Future.

Lil Nas X, 8:30 PM – 9:30 PM

Just four years ago, Montero Lamar Hill had a massive, out-of-nowhere, overnight hit with the singular country-rap “Old Town Road”, and the world had met Lil Nas X (QRO photos at a ‘22 festival). “Road” had the longest ever run atop the Billboard charts, with numerous remixes (including with Billy Ray Cyrus). He’s since taken his superstardom by the reins, coming out as gay and taking on the ridiculous conservative haters (as well as do a slew of commercials).

Remix master Dan Griffith comes to Hangout as Gryffin.

Out of a jazz background, Zachary William Dess became electronic artist Two Feet, and returns to Hangout.

Known for his psychedelic excursions, Thundercat (QRO photos at a festival) has worked with the likes of Flying Lotus, and won a Grammy working with Kendrick Lamar on To Pimp a Butterfly. He (QRO photos at a festival) has been compared to the likes of Jaco Pastorius for his precise and experimental basslines, and in 2020 (QRO photos in 2019) his fourth studio album It Is What It Is won him his own Grammy for Best Progressive R&B Album, and now comes to Hangout (QRO photos at a 2021 festival).

Solana Rowe, a.k.a. SZA (QRO photos at a festival), had people talking from the get-go, but that’s only been more so since 2017’s debut full-length, Ctrl, regarded as one of the albums of the year (QRO Top Albums of 2017), including playing Saturday Night Live and working with Kendrick Lamar on Black Panther’s Oscar-nominated “What Lovers Do”. And she finally won her deserved Grammy in 2000, for “Kiss Me More” with Doja Cat, and last year put out her #1 follow-up, SOS (QRO photos at a ’22 festival), now returning to Hangout.

Flume, 7:45 PM – 8:45 PM

Bringing electronics from the other side of the world is Sydney’s Harley Streten – a.k.a. Flume (QRO photos at a festival). He’s coming off winning the 2017 Grammy for Best Dance/Electronic Album for Skin, and more recently this year’s mixtape Things Don’t Always Go the Way You Plan. He plays his second Hangout (QRO photos at a ’22 festival).

Adam, Jack, and Ryan form the Manhattan DIY indie-pop trio AJR, who bring their eclectic pop back to Hangout.

Sabrina Carpenter has risen at a young age from acting to music, because “Can’t Blame a Girl for Trying”, with already her fifth full-length in last year’s Emails I Can’t Send.

After a trip to Big Sur in California, Boston DJ Jackson Stell became Big Wild, and finally comes to Hangout after having to miss 2020.

One of the few people who had a good pandemic, John Schuster was fired as an accountant for spending too much time on his music in 2019 – only to have his breakout as John Summit in the following, otherwise-dark year.

Originally frontman for L.A. post-hardcore outfit From First to Last, Sonny Moore – a.k.a.
