Gossip : Real Power

A decade or two ago, Gossip was on the forefront of both LGBTQ action and indie-dance, getting folks of all stripes onto the dancefloor. But in 2016 the group went on hiatus as frontwoman Beth Ditto focused on other matters. 2019 saw they reunite for the tenth anniversary of Music For Men (QRO review), and word of a new album – only for you-know-what to hit the next year. But Gossip never dies, and they’re back with their Real Power.

And Power is a powerful record, from the get-go with the big “Act of God” followed by the electro-dance indie-funk title track that is the Gossip you know & love. But the group doesn’t just go big, but can get darker & starker with “Turn the Card Slowly” or stripped down kiss-off “Don’t Be Afraid”. It all ends with wry, world-weary & world-wise “Peace and Quiet”.

Admittedly, Gossip can’t be as revelatory now as they once were, in the land of DJs and marriage equality (and Real Power does push activism to the forefront as prior work), but it’s just great to have Gossip back in all their Real Power.
