DZ Deathrays : No Sleep EP Acting as precursor to DZ Deathray’s forthcoming full-length Bloodstreams, their No Sleep EP showcases the group’s blend of thrash-rock with a dance sensibility.  With a sound akin to Death From Above 1979, DZ Deathrays replicate their two-man setup (though switch out the bass for a guitar).  As an exercise in building hype it’s not a bad one as there’s no filler on this short release.

First out the gate is raucous barnstormer "No Sleep".  It sets the tone perfectly, warning the listener that there’ll be, "No sleep ‘till you pass out."  After thrashing to a halt thick, Justice-like guitar gristle introduces "Gebbie Street", the strongest track on this release.  The subsequent introduction of bongos into the piece jars a little at first, but ears quickly acclimate and they fill the track out nicely.

At the mid-point, the stuttered stomp of "Blue Blood" is propulsive, but the levels feel a little off here.  The percussive component provided by Simon Ridley seems muted when stacked against the vocals and guitar work of Shane Parsons.  The same applies to "The Mess Up", a malevolent number with a video that demands YouTubing.  It’s a little disappointing but doesn’t detract from the fun too much.  Final track "Teeth" rounds out the piece, continuing in the vein that went before.

Each of these songs could soundtrack a party descending into bacchanalian chaos.  Taken as a whole it’s a fantastic introduction to what is sure to be a pretty devastating oeuvre.
