Thursday was extensive at CMJ ’15.
CMJ showcase @ Elvis Guesthouse
Early on, heyrocco played the new Elvis Guesthouse just to the north of Houston, while Diet Cig and Dirty Ghosts played the more venerable (relatively speaking) Cake Shop (QRO venue review) to the so of Ho:

The Band Mom showcase @ Passenger Bar
Courtesy Tier

It’s not CMJ without a local QRO favorite like Courtesy Tier. The trio is putting out an EP next month, and played a bunch at CMJ (including earlier in the day), so couldn’t miss them. The sound at Passenger Bar (which will be closing soon) was actually pretty good, at least for CT’s dark blues-rock, if no light and an awkward position for the performing area (right next to the entrance/exit).

FLOOD Magazine showcase @ Brooklyn Bowl
The Joy Formidable

One of the bigger acts to play CMJ ’15 was The Joy Formidable, who played a special show at Brooklyn Bowl (QRO venue review) as part of FLOOD Magazine’s schedule of performances. The group will be out with a new record in the new year, and played their new “Passerby” – which actually isn’t on the new album. They were in good spirits, like singer/guitarist Ritzy Bryan blaming Saxons like drummer Matt Thomas for giving the lovely Welsh town where they made their new record the terrible name of ‘Mold’.
The trio closed with an epic, extended “Whirring”, which included Thomas asking the crowd if they wanted more.

Other notes:
-Yes, a few of the many screens on the walls at Brooklyn Bowl were showing the Mets-Dodgers winner-take-all final NLDS game.
Unfortunately missed:
-Holly Miranda (QRO spotlight on) @ Knitting Factory (QRO venue review).
