Close Up is located on 154 Orchard Street, Manhattan, between Stanton and Rivington Streets. It lays right next door to the former Annex, just one block away from Pianos and the former Cake Shop & Living Room, around the corner from Arlene’s Grocery, and within the circle of venues in the Bowery (roughly between Houston, A, Delancey Street, and Bowery), which includes those, Mercury Lounge, Bowery Ballroom, and others. It is a jazz club, and opened on June 1st, 2024 with Kalia Vandever.

Down a few stairs from the street, there is an entry foyer and thin hallway to the back room venue, with a lounge to the left upon entering. There are bars at the back ends of both the lounge and venue room, with waitresses. Everything is very ‘modern classy’, from the stylistic chairs to the décor. That includes the signature cocktails and Venezuelan bites – though some of the drink names are a bit silly-risqué, such as ‘Woman On Top’ and ‘Hanky Panky’ (and you’ll want some empanadas, because no one should have a Woman On Top on an empty stomach…). Their prices are not cheap, but not as expensive as one might expect, given the classy nature and general post-COVID venue drink price inflation.

The back room venue has tables and chairs like a jazz club or coffee house, with the actual performing stage in the back left upon entering, the bar in the back right. The stage is on the same level as the crowd, just delineated by a red carpet, but with everyone seated and far more respectful than your rock clubs, there is still a distinct separation. Like many jazz clubs, Close Up can fit in two separate performances (usually of the same artist) in one night. Of special note are the tiny red lights that one can flick on at your table to request service, resolving a major issue that can plague a quiet space.

Billed as “not your grandaddy’s jazz club,” Close Up is a twenty-first century take on an American twentieth-century icon. Yes, it’s billed both younger and upscale (but isn’t that what you want to be?…), and yet isn’t daunting or intimidating. In short, a special place to go.
