Amid all the exuberant female pop out there, what about the more relaxed & sweeter style? Instead of fireworks, woodwinds; instead of pulsating lights, sunshine. Thankfully, Clairo brings the lighter side of things on a record that is pure Charm.
Rather than channel Madonna or Britney, Clairo looks more to the Francophile sweet sixties sounds. Not in-your-face, but a Charming companion throughout (she was kind of on-the-nose with the album title…), even when she’s “Sexy to Someone”. There are some more interesting takes, such as “Slow Dance” and the light love of “Add Up My Love”, even if others aren’t as much stand-outs.
Not a collection of songs or some grand journey, Charm feels almost like a place and time you want to be in with the lovely Clairo.
