When Broken Social Scene put out Let’s Try the After Vol. 1 EP (QRO review) in February, it was obvious that there’s be a follow-up EP (and maybe more), but not that it would come so soon, just two months later. Like Vol. 1, Vol. 2 manages to pack the alt-collective’s diverse greatness into just five songs, though leans more towards their airy side.
Note that that isn’t the case with its stellar standout, “Can’t Find My Heart”, which is absolutely great Broken Social Scene pressing, expansive action, and is sure to be great live. However, the rest of Vol. 2 goes atmospheric, from the bird sounds of opener “Memory Lover” to the airy tech-fuzz of closer “Wrong Line”. There’s sweet background music, including vocoder, on “Big Couches”, and “Let’s Try the After” is a nice, also fuzzy, meander.
Doing multiple EPs hasn’t limited Broken Social Scene, but instead allowed them to stretch, with fewer expectations (almost akin to their Broken Social Scene Presents… records) – they don’t have to be You Forgot It In People Vol. 2. Here’s for trying even more After.
