Since 2011’s A Different Kind of Fix (QRO review), Britain’s Bombay Bicycle Club have trafficked in a certain type of chill-but-hopeful, even bright electro. If it doesn’t bowl you over, it’s certainly nice to listen to, and sometimes more can be found underneath their shine. That continues with the guest-laden My Big Day.
And those guests do add to Day. Most notable is Damon Albarn on “Heaven”, whose better chill does admittedly sound like a Gorillaz track of his, but Gorillaz is a great thing to sound like. Nilüfer Yanya brings a better mix of chill and pop to “Meditate”, while Chaka Khan’s own chill is cheery on “Tekken 2”. If other songs don’t stand out as much, it’s still a very nice whole.
While sometimes Bombay Bicycle Club can play it a little too safe in their enjoyable nature, other times they go for more, like on My Big Day.
