Baker Falls is located on 101 Avenue A, Manhattan, between 6th and 7th Street, just southwest of Tompkins Square Park, in what used to be the Pyramid Club. It is one block north of DROM, and six-plus blocks north of the Lower East Side circle of venues such as Mercury Lounge, Arlene’s Grocery, Piano’s, and Bowery Ballroom. A new venue, it opened in the summer of 2023, run by the people behind the late Cake Shop and Knitting Factory.
The main front section consists of a long side bar to the right as you enter, with the black box stage area in the back, past the ticket-taker. There is also a separate downstairs area done up like an old-timey living room (shades of Union Hall), with its own bar. There are single occupancy bathroom both downstairs and between the stage & main rooms. While certainly nothing fancy, the back stage area has better sound and lighting than one would expect for the size.
Before the rise & fall of the Lower East Side, it was just north of Houston that hosted music and more in the eighties & nineties, yet now the whole island has a severe lack of small venues, ones that only host small acts, but still have their own room for music (not just shunted in an awkward corner of the floor). That’s what it’s so great to have a space like Baker Falls come in.
