The Oakland foursome mix grand rock with alt-new country to varying effects, playing better when they tend towards the former than the latter.
The EP starts with first single “Turn Me Off”; catchy and up-bright, if a little emo, it is a strong introduction, but is still outshone by the following “Awake”. That grander and more impressive piece of rock is hopefully the foundation upon with Audrye Sessions will build their LP. The b-sides to Audrye Sessions are two alt-new country tracks, “Where You’ll Find Me” and “New Year’s Day”. While the former is catchy with a nice swing, and the latter more heart-on-its-sleeve, neither one of the pair ever reach the heights of “Awake” (and really, no one should name a song “New Year’s Day” – the comparisons are inevitable, and never favorable…).
Despite the somewhat varied nature of their EP, Audrye Sessions make a good, tight case for themselves and their grander indie-rock. Look for their full-length in 2009.
