LA’s wonder trio ASHRR come back with a new single that will be part of their sophomore record, “Different Kind of Life”.

The band still explores the dance vibes we have been able to hear in their preceding singles such as “What’s Been Turning You On” (QRO review), “Fizzy” (QRO review), their cover version of The Romantics’ “Talking in Your Sleep” (QRO review) or “Bad Reasons” (QRO review), letting the drums and the thumping bass lead the melody.

However, in this track, the different elements of the keyboards, courtesy of Josh Charles, intertwine with the various layers of guitar played by Ethan Allen while the lyrics are delivered with the usual depth and warmth of singer Steven Davis. Contrary to previous singles, this one accumulates and juxtaposes layers upon layers of melodies and sounds, resulting in a dense, mesmerizing song, arguably their strongest to date in the run-up to this new record.

The insisting chorus “Why do we keep looking for a different kind of life?” contrasts with the descriptive style of the verses and will quickly become an earworm to anybody who will listen. Speaking of its significance, the band have explained that the lyrics are about the cycle of samsara, about how we get into that vicious cycle of believing that we need, deserve or want more than what we have.

It may seem that a multilayered, urban, pop-dancey melody could be the wrong base for such deep lyrics, but the band’s composition works to surround and support the words without any cracks.

In this new release, the band’s label, 20/20 Vision Recordings has included a remix by Berlin electronic legend, Massimiliano Pagliara and another catchy remix under the moniker Ashrr Soundsystem.
