Alex Lahey : The Answer Is Always Yes

Australia’s Alex Lahey burst onto the scene in 2017 with the exuberant, loveable I Love You Like a Brother (QRO review), and managed to follow that up without losing her core charm on 2019’s The Best of Luck Club (QRO review). Well, things have only gotten darker since then (and not just a worldwide pandemic), but Lahey hasn’t. Indeed, she drew in some outside songwriters & producers for the first time, for the wider The Answer Is Always Yes.

Now, this is still Alex Lahey, and Yes still has her fun relax. But that’s mixed with a bit of disco on opener “Good Time”, while “Makes Me Sick” goes full-on sad girl pop. There are two great kiss-offs, “You’ll Never Get Your Money Back” and “On the Way Down”, plus a song in praise of “Shit Talkin’”, because Lahey can even make that a good time. “Congratulations” has the ‘“I’m doing just fine’” when she’s not’ wry nature that the songwriter has been known for since her start.

There are some bigger excursions, such as the more angular, even post-punk “They Wouldn’t Let Me In”, but for the most part this is the Alex Lahey you’ve known & loved. Listen to Lahey? The Answer Is Always Yes.
