80-35 Festival 2018 Preview

In the heart of the country, where I-80 meets I-85, Des Moines hosts the great 80/35 Festival, Friday & Saturday, July 6th & 7th:

FRIDAY, JULY 6th

Hy-Vee Main Stage

Phantogram, 9:15 PM

Saratoga Springs’ dancetronica act Phantogram (QRO photos at a festival) got notice less for their debut full-length Eyelid Movies (QRO review) than their enchanting live show (QRO photos at a festival) – which works outdoors (QRO photos outdoors at a festival), at least when in the evening (QRO photos at a festival). 2014’s Voices (QRO review) upped their game (QRO photos at a festival), after which they teamed up with Big Boi as ‘Big Grams’ (QRO photos at a festival). But now the Phanto is back (QRO photos), with 2016’s strong Three (QRO review), coming to 80/35 (QRO photos at a festival).
Phantogram
Atmosphere, 7:00 PM

The DJ/producer and rapper duo hailing from Minneapolis, Minnesota (QRO photos at a festival) has already garnered themselves the reputation of one of hip hops most cacophonous and respected acts. Known for his aggressive and energetic performances, Atmosphere’s set is a definite must-see (QRO photos outdoors) as he returns to 80/35 (QRO photos at 80/35 ‘12).

Phoebe Bridgers, 5:00 PM

SATURDAY, JULY 7th

Hy-Vee Main Stage

Kesha, 9:15 PM

Kesha Rose Sebert has been something of a divisive figure in popular music. She’s had some huge success – at one point her single “Tik Tok” was the best-selling digital single in history, and she’s worked with everyone from Brittany Spears to The Flaming Lips. She’s also been derided as a pretty face, but trashy rapper, currently in a legal dispute with her former producer – even her former stylized name ‘Ke$ha’ was a subject of debate. Regardless, she brings her big show to 80/35.

Courtney Barnett, 7:00 PM

Melbourne’s Courtney Barnett (QRO photos at a festival) won fans like Rolling Stone and New York Times after her CMJ 2013 performance (QRO festival recap), with funny, rambling lyrics and a deadpan delivery (QRO photos). Since then she’s just gone and won fans outside of just critics with 2015 debut full-length, Sometimes I Sit and Think, and Sometimes I Just Sit, last year’s team up with Kurt Vile, Lotta Sea Live, and this year’s Tell Me How You Really Feel.

Car Seat Headrest, 5:00 PM

After a series of solo, self-released Bandcamp records (named literally 1, 2, 3, 4 and more), Will Toledo’s Car Seat Headrest (QRO photos at a festival) graduated to a full band & Matador signing for 2015’s Teens of Style and 2016’s Teens of Denial.
