4Knots

After the demise of Coney Island’s Siren Music Festival (QRO recap of final year), esteemed alt-weekly Village Voice has held the 4Knots Festival on South Street Seaport (QRO venue review). Unfortunately, Hurricane Sandy & more have left the Seaport under repair, so this year 4Knots stays on the water but heads uptown to Pier 84 (QRO venue review). It also isn’t free anymore, but is still some great music in the great outdoors of New York City, Saturday, July 11th:

Super Furry Animals, 8:30 PM

Playing their first NYC show in five years is headliner Super Furry Animals. The Welsh group, fronted by Gruff Rhys, brought the psychedelics and electronic experimentation to British guitar rock, return from a five-year hiatus behind the reissue of out-of-print Mwng and a book about their ascent to fame, Rise of the Super Furry Animals.

Stephen Malkmus & The Jicks, 6:45 PM

After the worldwide reunion tour of Pavement in 2010 (QRO live review), singer/songwriter Stephen Malkmus returned to his Jicks (QRO live review), including the festival circuit (QRO photos from a festival).  S.M. & The Jicks also returned to the studio with 2011’s Mirror Traffic (QRO review), something of a return to his earlier solo work, after 2008’s jammier Real Emotional Trash (QRO review), though last year’s Wig Out At Jagbags (QRO review) wasn’t quite the impressive record it could have been.  The band (QRO live review) naturally favors newer songs (at least now people don’t ask them to play Pavement songs – QRO live review), such as  “Independence St.” (QRO video) and great single “Senator” (QRO video), but there’s still room for an oldie like “1% of One” (QRO video).

Twin Peaks, 5:45 PM

Of course there’s a band named Twin Peaks (QRO photos at a festival) – even before the recent announcement of new episodes. Their power-pop and wild stage antics bring to mind The Replacements (QRO album review).

Mikal Cronin, 4:45 PM

Alt-garage utility player Mikal Cronin (QRO photos at a festival) has emerged as a force in his own right (QRO photos at a festival), most recently with last month’s MCIII.

Screaming Females, 3:45 PM

Fronted by an actual female, singer/guitarist Marissa Paternoster, the punk rock trio got a lot of praise in 2009 for Power Move (QRO review), and have kept up their self-described sound (QRO photos at a festival).

Happyness. 2:45 PM

London’s alt-rock Happyness (QRO photos) come to 4Knots behind March’s reissue of their debut, Weird Little Birthday, and amid work on their follow-up.
